Work at the Center for Surface Biotechnology and at the University of Utah
Karin Dahlgren Caldwell is Professor of Surface Biotechnology and directs the Center for Surface Biotechnology. As a result of her extended research career in the United States she holds appointments as Adjunct Professor of Chemistry and of Chemical and Fuels Engineering, in addition to being Research Professor of Bioengineering, all at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. Her activities at the Center include coordinating the efforts of its different research groups, and to satisfy the research interests of the Center's different industrial partners. She lectures regularly on physical biochemistry and separation science, and is responsible for the Center's course on Biosensors.
Profile, professional and personal
After a year of kinetics studies in Montpellier, France, Karin joined the research group of Jerker Porath at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Uppsala, where she worked on lectin purification and characterization. After a few years of training in theoretical separation science under J. Calvin Giddings at the University of Utah in the US, she returned to Uppsala to prepare a doctoral thesis on enzyme immobilization based on hydrophobic interaction. During the first period in the Giddings laboratory she initiated exploratory work with the field-flow fractionation technique, work that she subsequently returned to Utah to continue. In 1985 she was able to start her own research group in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Utah, and in 1996 she became chairman of this department. In 1985 she began preparations for the formation of a University-Industry research cooperative named Center for Biopolymers at Interfaces and served as its director from its formal inception in 1986 until her resignation in 1997. At its peak, this center counted 25 member industries, and 24 faculty members from different departments and colleges across the Utah campus. During the past two decades she has been keenly interested in questions of technology transfer and how to foster constructive relations between academic and industrial research groups. A practical example on this is Allvivo, Birmingham, AL, USA, a company of which Karin is both a co-founder and holds a position as chair of its scientific advisory board. While in Utah she was also actively involved in promoting her Swedish heritage, as exemplified by her creation of the Swedish Heritage Society of Utah and the Utah chapter of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce. Her leisure interests include classical music from all periods, as well as hiking and ski mountaineering.
